Check out the February 2021 issue of Industrial Heating, featuring an editorial on Brazing vs. Braze Welding, along with Better Refractory Formulations through Accelerated Scientific Discovery.
Heating with fuel-fired burners is the most effective and cost-efficient heating method. Personnel safety, production equipment protection and maintaining production schedules are all best served by understanding safety requirements. NFPA is the consensus safety authority.
Aluminum was first discovered in the early 1800s and was produced in quantity during the turn of the 20th century using the Hall–Héroult smelting process. Interestingly enough, Carl Benz was patenting his first version of a self-propelled internal-combustion-engine automobile during that same time. During these times, automobiles or horseless carriages were a luxury and difficult for common people to afford.
A tool to optimize powder formulations for metal additive manufacturing will greatly decrease time for new alloy development and offer superior performance at lower cost for customized industrial applications.
The Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) in the U.S. Department of Energy is sponsoring research to formulate high-quality metal powders optimized for metal additive manufacturing (AM), including hard-to-build alloys such as high-temperature refractory alloys. AM refractory multi-principal-element alloys (MPEAs), comprising elements with melting points of 1850-2200°C, offer the potential for step-change improvements in extreme high-temperature resistance needed for the newest high-efficiency gas turbines and other industrial applications.
Question: I was torch brazing a large-diameter copper tube into a copper fitting and built up a nice fillet on the top of the joint at my customer’s request. Someone told me that the joint I made was not a properly brazed joint but was a braze-weld instead. What did he mean? How does braze welding with a torch compare to what I thought I was doing?
We are pleased to contribute editorial for this quarterly column. Over the coming year, we will share the advancements we are making at the Advanced Casting Research Center on innovative processing methods for cast components; measurement of heat-transfer coefficient and other critical process parameters; big-data research; and advanced-alloy development initiatives.
Tooling failure analysis can be very challenging. Frequently, we have to deal with complex loading and multiple simultaneous damage processes. Because the tools are so hard, fracture surface features are often very faint.
After each election, lobbyists in Washington, D.C., like myself, work with clients to plan their legislative and regulatory agendas based on the outcomes in November. This year, not only did we have to await the results of two Senate runoff elections in Georgia, but the winners on January 5 realigned power in Washington and with it upended the agendas of businesses across the country.
Refractory Sheet Type RS-1200 is a high-strength composite designed for use as thermomechanical and electrical insulation in applications with temperatures as high as 2372°F (1300°C). RS-1200 is a combination of strong reinforcing fibers tightly bound in an alumina ceramic matrix.
The RollerFORM XL scanner answers the demand for a wide-coverage and easy-to-implement phased-array tool to accelerate the inspection of composite components with large surface areas.
The MWIR-B-640 mid-wavelength borescope is designed for furnace applications. It enables highly accurate and fully radiometric temperature measurement image data to be taken, stored and trended over the lifetime of the furnace, providing a continuous and clear view – even through heavy smoke and hot atmospheres.
Designed to combine the latest advances in vacuum metrology with exceptional manufacturing quality, VACTEST vacuum measurement equipment provides an innovative and comprehensive portfolio of active vacuum gauges and controllers.
