The use of vacuum technology for carburizing has always shown the most potential for improving the manufacturing process by reducing both processing time and the number of manufacturing steps required to produce a part.
Nucor Steel has chosen Danieli to supply a new quenching and self-tempering system to be installed at its mill in Marion, Ohio. The quenching and self-tempering process improves the mechanical properties of deformed bars, particularly yield strength, using billets with lower alloy content. The result is a product with final technological characteristics equal to or better than those obtained by low-alloyed/micro-alloyed steels.

Baker Furnace, a division of Thermal Product Solutions, installed a quench tank for a commercial heat treater as part of its aftermarket services. The company had two quench tanks (one hot water and one cold water) and three drop-bottom furnaces and needed a third quench tank to optimize quench loads per day. The quench tank has three impellers capable of 27,000 GM on a 15,000-gallon tank. This style of agitation allows for thick, large castings to dissipate heat faster.

Austria-based voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co. successfully commissioned a new heat-treatment line supplied by SMS group. Designed for seamless tubes with outside diameters between 60.3 and 273 mm (2.4 and 10.7 inches), it can process steel grades with alloying contents of up to approximately 20%. The line consists of a walking-beam-type austenitizing furnace, an SMS quenching head, a cooling table for normalizing, a tempering furnace, a cooling bed and two sawing stations for sample cutting. This equipment allows voestalpine Tubulars to perform heat treatments such as quenching, tempering and normalizing.
