Victaulic, a manufacturer of mechanical pipe-joining and fire-protection solutions, acquired Horizon Metals Inc. of Nephi, Utah. Horizon Metals is an iron and steel foundry that offers heat-treatment, induction-melting and mechanical-testing services. The acquisition increases Victaulic’s capacity for large-diameter piping solutions. With this acquisition, Victaulic has added over 1.4 million square feet of foundry and manufacturing capacity in North America since 2011. The Easton, Pa.-based company now has four foundries located in the United States.
NSL Analytical Services, an independent testing laboratory, has been acquired by May River Capital, a Chicago-based investment firm. NSL Analytical, which opened in 1945, serves over 1,700 customers globally from two locations in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. The company provides a range of analytical testing for quality control, failure analysis, product performance and material selection and characterization. These services include metallurgical evaluations and mechanical testing.
Shimadzu Scientific Instruments and Oklahoma State University (OSU) joined forces to establish The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology’s (CEAT) Mechanical and Physical Properties Testing Lab. The new lab is part of the ExxonMobil Testing Laboratory in the new ENDEAVOR facility on OSU’s campus in Stillwater, Okla. Equipped with a collection of Shimadzu’s materials-testing instruments, the space will allow students to characterize materials by utilizing an array of scientific techniques.
Solar Atmospheres of Western PA added tensile testing to its range of mechanical testing services. The company recently took delivery of a new Tinius Olsen 300SL Universal testing machine and installed it in a temperature-controlled environment. In addition, Solar Atmospheres of Western PA purchased a new Haas Model TL-1 CNC lathe to custom-machine test specimens. Both units are located in a new 10,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the company’s 75,000-square-foot vacuum heat-treating production facility in Hermitage, Pa.
Fastener reliability and performance can only be ensured by testing. Since heat treatment can have a profound influence on final properties, it is especially important to conduct testing on the raw material, after heat treatment and on the finished product.
