West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced that BHE Renewables, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy business, entered into an agreement with the State of West Virginia to purchase more than 2,000 acres of land in Ravenswood, W.V., to be developed as a first-of-its-kind renewable-energy microgrid-powered industrial site. Precision Castparts Corp. (PCC), a Berkshire Hathaway Inc. business, will be the first company to locate on the site and will develop a titanium melting facility that will use 100% renewable energy to manufacture titanium products for the aerospace industry.
Quintus Technologies developed a new process, high-pressure warm forming (HPWF), that combines high pressure with a moderately elevated temperature for more rapid, cost-effective and precise forming of titanium parts. HPWF paves the way for more widespread adoption of Ti-6Al-4V, the grade of titanium used in many manufacturing sectors for its high strength, light weight, formability and high corrosion resistance.
Solar Manufacturing shipped a large, horizontal, front-loading vacuum furnace to a titanium manufacturer and fabricator located in the Midwest. The furnace includes a molybdenum-shielded hot zone and heating elements, with a work zone size of 54 inches wide x 54 inches high x 144 inches deep and a weight capacity of 7,500 pounds. It is specifically designed for processing titanium alloys for the aerospace and medical industries, and it is fully compliant to aerospace specification AMS 2750E.
