Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems received three separate orders for batch steam-treating equipment. The batch steam treaters produce an oxide layer that promotes corrosion- and wear-resistance properties and provides an attractive surface finish. The three unique orders range in size from 18 to 30 inches in diameter and 12 to 48 inches deep. The gross load weight capacity ranges from 300 to 1,800 pounds. The electrically heated equipment has a maximum operating temperature rating of 1400°F.
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. successfully completed the acquisition of AK Steel Holding Corp., integrating North America’s largest producer of iron-ore pellets downstream into the production of value-added steel and specialty manufactured parts for the automotive industry. The combined company will be led by Chairman, President and CEO Lourenco Goncalves. It combines mining, pelletizing, direct-reduction, EAF steelmaking, BF/BOF steelmaking, highly technologically developed finishing mills and automated manufacturing of auto parts.
Solar Atmospheres of Western PA (SAWPA) can now offer in-house metallographic testing with the purchase of a Zeiss AxioVert A1 inverted materials microscope, accompanying Axiocam digital camera and Zen Core materials-analysis software package. The AxioVert A1 system allows for reflected brightfield, darkfield, polarized and circular contrasting techniques, along with a 50x to 1000x magnification range. The additional Axiocam and Zen Core materials-analysis software features automated determination of material grain size.
Fives received an order from JSW Steel, India’s leading steel producer, for an upgrade project of its reheating furnaces at JSW Steel Vijayanagar Works, which currently produces 12 million tons per year. Fives will modernize two reheating furnaces to increase their efficiency and capacity from 250 tons per hour to 295 tons per hour to meet the new requirements of the hot-strip mill N1. Both walking-beam furnaces were previously supplied by Fives. The project for both furnaces is scheduled to be completed by 2021.
American Zinc Recycling (AZR), a provider of environmental services to the U.S. steel industry, announced the restart of production at its updated facility in Rutherford County, N.C. The facility is designed to produce special-high-grade (SHG) zinc using recycled steel-mill dust. It is expected to produce 155,000 tons of SHG zinc annually.
Jingye Group, a Chinese steelmaker, acquired British Steel’s facilities in the U.K. and the Netherlands, a move that will secure approximately 3,200 jobs. Jingye will invest approximately $1.5 billion in the business. Initiatives include: the development of an electric-arc furnace (EAF) in Teesside; the construction of a new 250-MW power plant to serve the Scunthorpe site; investment in the rolling mills to produce high-quality steel products; the construction of a new rebar line; and enhancing the current rail mill.
Eurometal S.A. placed an order with Hertwich Engineering for the supply of a multi-chamber melting furnace for the expansion of its aluminum casthouse in Klomnice, Poland. The plant, which has a capacity of 30,000 tons per year, is scheduled to start operation in spring 2021. Hertwich Engineering, based in Austria, is a company of SMS group. The furnace, which is designed for a capacity of 100 tons per day, will be integrated into the existing production chain. It will mainly process clean and painted extrusion and sheet scrap as well as smaller amounts of briquetted sawing and machining chips. The scrap will be preheated for around 30 minutes to a temperature of approximately 932°F (500°C) by an intense hot-gas flow.
Nucor Corp. awarded SMS group a follow-up order for the supply of reheat and heat-treatment facilities for its plate mill being built in Brandenburg, Ky. Nucor previously ordered a slab-casting machine for the new mill from SMS group in 2019. The follow-up contract is for all of the plate mill’s slab and ingot reheat equipment, a heat-treatment line for heavy plate up to 14 inches (356 mm) thick and a continuous heat-treatment line for plate between 0.19 and 14 inches (4.8 and 102 mm) thick and up to 168 inches (4,267 mm) wide.
Nucor-JFE Steel Mexico, located in Silao, Mexico, has begun operating its continuous galvanizing line, which will produce hot-dip galvanized sheet steel for the automotive market. The facility has a production capacity of 400,000 tons annually. It can produce sheet thicknesses of 0.4-2.6 mm and widths of 800-1,850 mm. Nucor-JFE has started trial production and will move toward full-scale sales and production once customer approvals have been obtained.
Steel Dynamics Inc. entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Zimmer, S.A. de C.V. as part of its raw-material procurement strategy to support its new Texas flat-roll steel mill, which is currently under construction and expected to begin operations in 2021. Zimmer is headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, and operates a ferrous and nonferrous scrap metals recycling business. The company's primary operations are comprised of six scrap-processing facilities that currently ship approximately 500,000 gross tons of scrap annually and have an estimated annual processing capability of approximately 2 million gross tons. Zimmer also operates several third-party scrap-processing locations.
