Republic Steel, a leading provider of special-bar-quality (SBQ) steel, anticipates starting production on its Lorain, Ohio, rolling mill in the second quarter. Over 60 employees have been hired and completed training, and the mill has undergone a complete refurbishment. The company has successfully run internal production trials and anticipates receiving sufficient orders to support moving to a production mode in the second quarter. The rolling mill has a monthly capacity of 35,000 tons, and it will expand Republic’s size range down to 7.5 mm for carbon, free-machining and alloy grades.
The company expected the 232 Steel Tariffs to create additional demand for domestic production, allowing production to begin in December 2018, but imports remain at historically high levels for products produced on this mill.
