Today, Nov. 15, is America Recycles Day, which was created to raise awareness about recycling and the purchasing of recycled products. A Keep America Beautiful national initiative, it is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. Did you know that around 20% of the world's aluminum requirements are covered by post-consumer scrap? Not to be left out, recycled steel is going to play a big part in the industry moving forward. Greensteel, for example, plans to recycle scrap steel using electric-arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. What about titanium? A plant in Europe will produce aviation-grade titanium by recycling. Chips and solid scrap are collected from aircraft manufacturers and then turned into titanium alloys.

Enjoy America Recycles Day! Thousands of communities across the country are participating in this annual event by promoting environmental citizenship and taking action to increase and improve recycling in America. Here is what those who are participating have committed to recycle in 2018:

  • Plastic bags and wraps – 29%
  • Plastic bottles and caps – 28%
  • Unwanted mail – 20%
  • Cartons – 11%
  • Mobile Devices – 8%
