It turns out that smog is harmful to more than your health … at least in China. Dangerous levels of smog in the cities of Beijing and Tianjin and the northern provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shandong in late December 2016 forced the municipal government of Beijing to issue an air quality red alert, which could in theory lead to the suspension of operations for heavy polluters – including aluminum producers.
