Nucor Corp. agreed to acquire Southland Tube, an independent manufacturer of hollow structural section (HSS) steel tubing, for $130 million. Southland Tube, with annual shipments of approximately 240,000 tons, has one facility in Birmingham, Ala. HSS is used in a variety of structural and mechanical applications, including nonresidential construction and heavy equipment end-use markets. Nucor acquired Independence Tube, another manufacturer of HSS steel tubing in September 2016 for $435 million. Nucor, through both acquisitions, is building a leadership position in the HSS steel tubing market and providing an additional channel to market for its sheet steel mills.
