CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, received a furnace that completes the equipment required for the production of superconducting coils. The coils are needed for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and future circular colliders. Superconducting accelerator magnets are vital for reaching higher energies and luminosities in particle accelerators.
The new 32-meter-long (105-foot-long) furnace will allow the heat treatment of coils with a length up to 11 meters (36 feet) and can reach temperatures up to 900°C (1652°F).
