Tenova developed a new furnace concept, the flexible modular furnace (FMF), for Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. (JSPL). The FMF, which was installed at JSPL’s Raigarh Steel Plant in India, is designed for steelmakers that currently use a significant amount of hot metal in their charge mix but are ready to move or return to scrap-based steelmaking. JSPL converted its existing electric-arc furnace (EAF) into the Tenova FMF, which can produce 32 heats with 89% guaranteed yield. By adopting the FMF, JSPL gained production-cost savings of around $15-18 per ton of steel, resulting in a yearly savings of approximately $15-20 million. The project was commissioned on Aug. 31, 2015, and was successfully completed in six months.
