Rolls-Royce officially opened its new $168 million Advanced Blade Casting Facility (ABCF) in Rotherham (U.K.). When fully operational in 2017, the 150,000-square-foot plant will employ 150 people and have the capacity to manufacture more than 100,000 single-crystal turbine blades a year. The blades will be included in a range of Trent engines, including the efficient XWB that powers the new Airbus A350 XWB. The ABCF will include automated manufacturing techniques developed within Rolls-Royce that have helped reduce the time it takes to manufacture a turbine blade by 50%.
