Nucor Steel successfully commissioned the first ZoloSCAN-EAF laser off-gas diagnostic system for electric-arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking at its facility in Crawfordsville, Ind. ZoloSCAN technology, which is provided exclusively by Colorado-based Zolo Technologies, utilizes tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) to measure carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water and temperature on a near real-time basis (less than 2-second delay) for the EAF steelmaking process. This enables rapid process feedback for improved control of energy and metallurgical inputs to the EAF process.
Nucor reports that it has been able to utilize ZoloSCAN-EAF to improve its steelmaking process, resulting in savings of electrical energy input, carbon additions and reduced power on times. Nucor has already placed an order for a second unit to support its South EAF.
