SMS Siemag will build and supply two submerged-arc furnaces for the production of metallurgical silicon at Mississippi Silicon's new facility in Burnsville, Miss. The furnaces, which will have a combined annual capacity of 33,000 tons, feature rotating furnace shells that avoid cold areas in the melt and prevent carbide deposits on the furnace walls. SMS Siemag will also supply the electrode columns, the material-handling system, the hydraulic systems and the electrical and automation systems. The Burnsville works, which is scheduled to start up in July 2015, will supply silicon to nearby customers in the aluminum and automotive industries.
