A Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) facility in Orissa, India, cast the first slabs on an X-Cast continuous caster supplied by SMS Siemag. Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) mainly processes sophisticated micro-alloyed steels and heavy-plate grades on the caster. This third slab caster in Steelworks No. 2 has doubled RSP’s slab production capacity to 3 million tons per year. The single-strand caster, designed as a vertical bending plant, is intended for slabs 220, 250 and 300 mm (8.7, 9.8 and 11.8 inches) thick and widths ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 mm (47.2-98.4 inches). SMS Siemag supplied all engineering, all mechanical components and the complete electrical and automation systems.
