Republic Steel, a leading provider of special-bar-quality (SBQ) steel, restarted steel production on the #7 Furnace at its Canton, Ohio, melt shop that experienced a transformer failure on Aug. 2, 2013. The company is also on schedule to start cold commissioning of its new electric-arc furnace and other steel refining and casting operations at its Lorain, Ohio, plant later this month. This $85 million capital project will provide more than 1 million tons of liquid steel for the production of bloom and billet cast semi-finished, bar and coil products. It will ultimately create nearly 450 full-time jobs over the next several years.
