Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. (JSPL), India’s largest steel maker, commissioned one of the country’s largest steel melt shops at its facility in Angul, Odisha. It includes a 250-ton capacity electric-arc furnace, one of the largest in operation in India. The melt shop has a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year and has the raw-material flexibility to use solid hot feed, solid cold feed and hot-metal feed. Hot DRI produced from the company’s DRI plant will be directly fed into the EAF at 550°C (1022°F) in an effort to reduce power consumption. JSPL plans on adding 3.5 million tons of capacity at Angul by the end of 2015.
