SMS Concast of Switzerland received an order for a 150-ton electric-arc furnace (EAF) and process equipment from Republic Steel of Cleveland, Ohio. The EAF will be installed at the company’s plant in Lorain, Ohio. The new EAF, which will increase Republic Steel’s annual liquid steel production by 1.2 million tons, will feed the company’s bloom and billet casters for the production of 7.5- to 165-mm-diameter SBQ flat steel and bar coil as well as 152-, 280-, 305- and 355-mm-diameter seamless tube rounds. Republic Steel will tap the first furnace heat in the second quarter of 2013.
