Ellwood National Steel (ENS) of Irvine, Pa., announced the commissioning of a new vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) unit for the production of stainless steel ingots for forging, ring rolling and as electrodes for VAR and ESR remelting. The VOD is in addition to ENS's existing ladle-furnace melt shop, which produces carbon and alloy steel ingots in weights to 24 tons from melt heats up to 48 tons. ENS will also expand its ingot-teeming capability to melt ingots to 45 tons in individual weight. The VOD was manufactured and installed by SMS Siemag.
