Qatar Steel plans to build a new steelmaking facility adjacent to existing plants in Mesaieed. It is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2013. The new 1.1 million metric ton/year plant will comprise a Siemens VAI ultrahigh-power 110-metric-ton electric arc furnace, 110-metric-ton ladle furnace and 6-strand high-speed billet caster coupled with fume-extraction system for zero emission.
The expansion will help Qatar Steel respond to steel demand in the local and GCC market. The plant will be designed according to Siemens VAI’s technology in the field of steel plant machinery, equipment and automation. The engineering design of the planned equipment will be designed to assure maximum safety. Special attention will also be paid to standardization, interchangeability of the various components and minimizing the need for maintenance and access.
