Quebec-based steel manufacturer Supermetal Structures will invest $6.6 million to upgrade the former Worthington steel plant in York County, S.C. Supermetal Structures, which purchased the building and 38 acres from Worthington for $2.2 million, has three plants in Canada with total annual capacity of more than 45,000 tons. The York County facility, which the company hopes to have up and running by the end of August, is expected to employ approximately 200 workers.

According to Supermetal Structures, the site was an excellent fit for its needs because the building has lifts capable of moving pieces up to 50 tons and has access to railway service. The addition of a U.S. plant will also help the company meet provisions of the federal Buy America act. One of Supermetal Structures' current projects includes 5,000 tons of steel for construction of the stands behind the left-field Green Monster wall at Fenway Park in Boston.
