Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) commissioned a high-capacity 4 million-metric-ton/year ladle furnace that will enable it to produce new steel grades for automotive and electrical-engineering applications. The company will use the new furnace to homogenize each melt’s temperature and chemical composition prior to continuous casting into slabs. The equipment will help NLMK achieve ultra-low sulfur content in steel while maintaining alloy additions and temperature parameters.
The equipment features fully automated process control as well as up-to-date fume extraction and gas cleaning to ensure good environmental performance. The furnace will also help reduce steel-treatment costs and improve quality. NLMK plans to commission an additional 4 million-metric-ton/year ladle furnace this year and two 2 million-metric-ton/year ladle furnaces in 2010-2011.
