SSAB will resume its project for a new advanced line for quenched and tempered (QT) steel plate in Mobile, Ala. The QT line is part of a major investment program announced in August 2008. Following a review, the decision has been made to implement the investment in Mobile with a new line that will increase capacity for QT plate by approximately 200,000 metric tons. SSAB expects the line to be in production during the first half of 2012. Siemens has already been awarded a contract to supply a vacuum tank degassing facility for the line.
SSAB also decided to construct a finishing line at its plate center in Kunshan, China, which was inaugurated in 2007 and operates warehouses and equipment for processing steel. The new finishing line, which will start up in the first half of 2011, will be able to handle additional deliveries of semi-finished plate from Mobile and Oxelösund, Sweden. Together, the Mobile and Kunshan investments total approximately $300 million.
