China Steel Corp. (CSC) commissioned a two-strand continuous slab caster in cooperation with SMS Siemag, a company of Germany’s SMS Group. The facility, erected at the Kaohsiung location, is designed for a maximum casting speed of 2.2 meters/minute and used for producing 2.6 million tons/year of steel slabs in gauges of 230 and 250 mm. SMS Siemag’s scope of supply included the basic and detail engineering as well as the supply of all mechanical core components and the entire electrical and automation system. CSC operates Taiwan’s largest integrated steel plant.

In other news from the SMS Group, JSW Steel Ltd. commissioned the first eight-strand billet caster in India together with SMS Concast. The billet caster is part of JSW’s expansion program, which will bring production capacity at the Vijayanagar works to 7 million tons/year. The billet caster comprises the technology and equipment for open and submerged casting. It is designed for a production capacity of 1.7 million tons of billets per year. SMS Concast also supplied the full automation software.
