Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (Baosteel) placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to equip an electric arc furnace (EAF) in its Shanghai facility with a refining combined burner (RCB) system. The aim of the project is to increase furnace productivity while reducing energy consumption. According to Siemens, installation of the RCB system will help reduce electrical energy consumption per metric ton of steel by up to 10%. Siemens’ scope of supply includes burners, modular front plates and valve stands for gas, oxygen and nitrogen. The modernized EAF will resume production in 2010 after a short down time.

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies commissioned a 4,100-millimeter plate mill for Wuyang Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. The new rolling mill will boost the previous system’s capacity from 1 million metric tons to 1.6 million metric tons of steel plate per year. The mill will be capable of producing 900- to 3,600-millimeter-wide plate with thicknesses ranging from 6 to 150 millimeters.
