Solar Manufacturing has received a contract to build a vacuum heat-treating furnace for the United States Mint for the purpose of heat treating coin dies of A9 tool steel. The contract was secured after running extensive tests for the A9 dies as trials with Solar Atmospheres’ heat-treating plant. The furnace will have an operating temperature of 2000°F with a circular hot zone mounted in a 304SS ring to encompass an effective work area of 18 inches wide x 14 inches high x 24 inches deep. Shipment of the furnace is scheduled for April 15, 2009.
The hot zone is comprised of multiple layers of graphite-felt insulation, Flexshield hot face and 360-degree full-circular graphite heating elements. The super-insulated hot zone will provide temperature uniformity of less than ±10°F throughout the work zone.
