The SGL Group – The Carbon Company – plans to triple its carbon-fiber production capacity to as much as 12,000 metric tons by 2012. In addition to the announced expansion of the Inverness (Scotland) location to an annual production of approximately 4,000 metric tons by the end of 2008, there are also plans to expand the Evanston (Wyoming) location and to establish a new carbon-fiber production site at Meitingen (Germany) with similar capacities.
SGL, which intends to invest around $422.7 million in these measures over the next five years, is currently benefiting from a strong carbon-fiber demand upturn in the aerospace industry and the automotive sector. There are currently only eight producers of carbon fibers worldwide, and SGL Group is the only European producer.
