The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has publishedDirect Strength Method Design Guideby Benjamin Schafer, Ph.D. The guide provides practical and detailed instruction on the use of the Direct Strength Method. It includes a tutorial to help engineers interpret elastic buckling analysis results and provides prescriptive guidelines and examples for developing beam and column charts. It also includes extensive design examples covering 14 different cold-formed steel cross-sections, which allows engineers to directly compare results between the Direct Strength Method and conventional design. The guide also provides instruction on how to handle unique situations in the elastic buckling analysis of cold-formed steel members.
