Core Furnace Systems (CORE) recently completed the successful start-up of a new 160-ton twin-tank vacuum degasser at IPSCO’s Montpelier, Iowa, facility. The vacuum degasser will be used to reduce the hydrogen content of the liquid steel, resulting in higher-quality steel for plate. The system is also capable of decarburization and oxygen reduction.

The main features of the vacuum-degasser system include a steam generation plant, hybrid combination of steam jet ejectors and liquid ring pumps, inline vacuum filtration system, vacuum tanks mounted on transfer cars and an advanced process-control system.
