SMS Demag Receives Orders for Continuous Casters
The Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), Russia, and Jindal South West Steel Ltd. (JSW), India, have both placed orders with SMS Demag (Germany) for the supply of a continuous caster. MMK also ordered a heavy plate mill with the pertaining electrical and automation systems. The commissioning of JSW’s continuous caster is scheduled for early 2008. MMK’s continuous caster and heavy plate mill are scheduled for commissioning in mid-2009.

JSW is to receive a single-strand continuous slab caster designed for the production of 1.8 million tons of slabs per year. The plant will produce slabs with a thickness of 220 mm. MMK’s continuous caster is designed for the production of slabs with a thickness of 300 mm. MMK’s heavy plate mill will produce plates in widths up to 4,800 mm with a planned annual capacity of approximately 1.5 million tons.
