U.S. steel mills shipped 9.74 million net tons in June 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Total shipments reflect an 18.3% increase from the 8.23 million net tons shipped June 2005. June's shipments, however, reflect a slight 2% decrease from May 2006.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
  • Service centers and distributors: +3.4%
  • Automotive: +16.8%
  • Construction and contractors' products: +16.9%
  • Oil and gas: +9.1%
  • Machinery, industrial equipment and tools: +11.7%
  • Appliances, utensils and cutlery: -3.5%
  • Containers, packaging and shipping materials: +5.3%
  • Electrical equipment: +20.6%
