P&L Heat Treating and Grinding (Youngstown, Ohio) has expanded its heat-treating services with the addition of controlled nitriding. In its aim to continuously improve technical standards, the company commissioned a new nitriding system fitted with a Protherm 700 high-performance controller from Process-Electronic GmbH (http://www.process-electronic.de). The furnace can accommodate loads measuring 990 mm diameter by 2000 mm deep (39 in. by 79 in.) and rated for 2720-kg (6000-lb) capacity. The new system is suited for processing extrusion dies and industrial tooling, whose performance and wear resistance are increased with nitriding, while defects are reduced by appropriate nitriding control. Installation of the project was completed in December, and production commenced in January 2006.
