SMI Steel-Alabama, Birmingham, Ala., has placed an order with Paul Wurth, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa., the U.S. subsidiary of Paul Wurth S.A. of Luxembourg to upgrade its 4-strand billet caster with Vibromold(tm) hydraulic mold oscillators. The caster at the SMI plant in Birmingham currently uses a conventional electromechanical oscillator originally supplied in 1990. The Vibromold(tm) units, which will be delivered in November for installation in December 2003, will include 42 mold section inserts with the ability to accommodate seven different casting formats, a quick exchange system for replacing molds, a Berthold(tm) level control system, an ABB Dual coil electromagnetic mold stirrer, a new hydraulic system and a new oscillator control system.
