The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has joined forces with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to establish a database that will determine whether student involvement in FIRST leads to engineering career choices. SME's Partnership Cardholder Program invites some 20,000 high school participants to register with SME in order to develop a database of participants to track, and in the long run, provide a picture of the students' educational and career progress. SME members are encouraged to join FIRST teams as mentor engineers to provide student teams with insider know-how such as how to brainstorm ideas and design robotic devices.
