Core Furnace Systems Awarded Automation Control Contract

Core Furnace Systems (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been contracted to upgrade the Level 1 and Level 2 control systems for a rotary hearth reheat furnace in the pipe mill at the Koppel Steel plant in Ambridge, Pa. The project provides the design, material supply, programming, testing, installation and commissioning of a new PLC based Level 1 combustion control system with a Human Machine Interface (HMI) as well as a new PC based Level 2 control system using OPC communications and .NET technology. The project also will include enhancements to the cooling water system and furnace instrumentation. The project will improve the computer controls and operating efficiencies of the 75-t/h rotary hearth furnace. Start-up and commissioning of the system is scheduled for November 2004.
