Sigma Aerospace Ltd., Surrey, UK, has installed an electric furnace with a top-loading retort for precisely controlled heat treatment of hot-end components from aviation, marine, and industrial engines. The furnace, designed and built by Carbolite Inc., Watertown, WI, is used to diffuse protective aluminum manganese chromium coatings onto turbine blades and vanes. The furnace can process up to 300 components at a time; a typical heat treatment cycle can range from 2 to 50 hours at 1832¯F (1000¯C).
