Ajax Induction Services, Warren, OH, has refurbished a large induction heating coil for the NASA Glenn Research Center's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, OH. The coil was taken out of service in 1996 after more than 30 years of operation. The completed coil assembly measures 7' 8" inside diameter and is over 31' high. The coil assembly consists of four separate coil section sub-assemblies, each section with its own 750 kW power supply. The coil is used to heat graphite to 4500¯F (2482¯C) and used to help produce conditions that simulate air flight at up to seven times the speed of sound.
