AMTellect Inc., State College, Pa., a subsidiary of Advanced Materials Technologies Pte Ltd., successfully developed and patented a method to form multimaterial components using powder injection molding (PIM). The injection molding of such bimetallic components is a single-step manufacturing operation that eliminates mechanical assembly and the associated fixturing and handling of parts that must be properly oriented, thereby reducing manufacturing cost. The sintering process inherent to PIM allows the two different materials to achieve metallurgical bonding. AMT had adopted this innovation into current production, initially for an automotive component.
