Kanthal Heating Elements Reduce Energy Consumption at Walther-Glas GmbH
October 23, 2001
Walther-Glas GmbH, based in Bad Driburg, in cooperation with Kanthal AB, recorded a 40 percent reduction in consumption on its forehearth feeder systems. Walther-Glas developed a forehearth channel system using Kanthal's Superthal flat panel heat modules to replace a conventional vertical heating system. As a result, the heating area has been reduced by 55 percent-an inner cross section of 100 mm x 244 mm is not sufficient whereas 250 mm x 400 mm was previously required. The panels are rated at 5 kW and are customized by Kanthal to a specified length and width. Rebuilding of the first new forehearth system was completed in only three days, minimizing production downtime. An immediate effect on energy consumption led to a 40 percent reduction-from 63000 kWh per month to approximately 38000 kWh.
