Rolls-Royce plc in London has reached an agreement with four new partners to join its Trent 900 aero engine program. The Trent 900 is being developed for the high-capacity, four-engine Airbus Industrie A380, which is expected to be in service in 2006. FiatAvio of Italy, together with Goodrich Corp., Hamilton Sundstrand and Honeywell of the U.S. have become risk and revenue sharing partners, joining Volvo, whose participation was announced in May. Goodrich has taken responsibility for the rear and center portions of the fan case, while Honeywell will supply the engine's pneumatic system, which includes components such as the starter, bleed valves and turbine case cooling system. FiatAvio, participants in both the Tay and Trent 500, will design and manufacture the Trent 900 gearbox, while Hamilton Sundstrand, already a partner in the Trent 500 program, will produce the Trent 900's full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system. The Trent 900, scheduled for engine certification in 2004 at 81,500-lb thrust, has been selected by Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Qantas and International Lease Finance Corp.
