Industrial Heating Magazine, in cooperation with the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), Jacksonville Beach, Fla., has awarded the sixth annual Master Craftsman Award to Hansen-Balk Steel Treating Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Hansen-Balk Steel Treating Co. has been in business since 1955 serving the automotive, aerospace, office furniture, oil field, machine tool builders, tool and die, and medical instruments industries. They currently occupy a modern 85,000 square foot building in Grand Rapids, Mich. Hansen-Balk was awarded a plaque and $1500 to be used as an educational scholarship in material sciences or heat treating. The award is based on contributions made by each applicant company in the areas of quality programs, pollution/hazardous waste control and community involvement. James Balk II, president of Hansen/Balk Steel Treating Co., and his wife Shirley, accepted the award during the MTI General Membership Meeting held in Big Sky, Montana, July 25-29, 2001.
