Metlab to Nitride Tank Turret Gears
February 13, 2002
Metlab, Wyndmoor, Pa., received a contract from Israeli Military Industries, Ramat Hasharon, Israel, to nitride tank turret gears. The gears, used in the Merkava MK.3, the main battle tank in service with the Israeli armed forces, are fabricated from a special grade of steel specifically designed for the nitriding process. The gears measure over 93 in. in diameter and require a minimum surface hardness of HRC55 and a case depth of 0.030 in. The contract calls for shipping gears to Metlab in a specially designed ocean vessel container to accommodate 16 to 18 pieces per shipment.
