Surface Modification Patent Granted for High Temperature Corrosion and Carburization Resistance

Alon Surface Technologies, Leechburg, PA, has been granted its fourth U.S. Patent, No. 6,165,286 for "Diffusion Heat Treated Thermally Sprayed Coatings." This patent covers Alon's DiffuseAlloyR process, an alternative method of diffusion coating that is more efficient for larger size components than conventional pack cementation processing. With this process, aluminum, aluminum-silicon, and/or MCrAlX - type (M=Fe, Ni, Co; X = rare earth) alloys are applied to the surface of a component by a thermal spray coating technique, which is subsequently heat treated in an inert atmosphere to form a high temperature corrosion resistant surface alloy diffused into the component. The surface alloy formed is metallurgically bonded to the component and is highly resistant to spalling or cracking.
