Gas Technology Institute (GTI) has agreed to transfer and license know-how to California-based Coen Co. Inc., for the manufacture of a new, low-emission burner developed by GTI and its research partners. Under the agreement, Coen will have exclusive rights to build and supply the burner for use in existing and new watertube boilers, including hot water generators and steam flood heaters. The patented Forced Internal Recirculation (FIR) burner couples staged combustion with internal recirculation of partial combustion products to minimize formation of both thermal and prompt NOx. In field tests conducted by GTI and its research partners, the burner demonstrated NOx emissions as low as 6.7 volumetric parts per million (vppm) and CO levels as low as 3 vppm in a 20 million Btu/hr watertube boiler.
