SSAB recently started production at its Axis steel mill in Mobile, Ala., where a $220 million expansion project is almost complete. The company will finish the 275,000-square-foot expansion, which includes a quench-and-temper line for steel plate, by the end of 2012. The new line will increase SSAB’s capacity of quench-and-tempered steel up to 220,000 metric tons per year. A smaller, existing line has a 100,000-ton/year capacity. The expansion is expected to create approximately 130 new jobs. The Axis plant also includes a heat-treating facility.
