SMS Meer (Germany) received an order from Steel Dynamics’ Structural and Rail Division for the supply of a 600,000 ton-per-year medium section mill for its Columbia City, Ind., facility. The mill will comprise 15 continuously arranged roll stands with flying shears, rake-type cooling bed, an 8-roller straightener and cold saws for cutting the sections to finished lengths. The medium section mill will allow Steel Dynamics to significantly expand its product range for beams, channels and angles. The main product size range lies between 3 and 14 inches (76 to 356 mm), although beams of up to 18 inches (457 mm) can also be produced. Commissioning of the mill is scheduled for the end of 2007.

In addition, SMS Meer received an order from Indian Seamless Metal Tubes (Baramati, India) for the supply of a seamless tube plant employing the PQF® (Premium Quality Finishing) process. The plant will be used to produce seamless tubes from 1.33 inches (33.7 mm) to 6.63 inches (168.3 mm) in diameter with a planned capacity of 350,000 tons per year.
