Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH placed an order with SMS Siemag for the construction of a near-net-shape caster in Peine, Germany. The order comprises basic and detail engineering, the supply of the entire mechanical equipment, the complete electrical and automation system, all ancillary equipment, and erection and cold commissioning in Peine. According to SMS Siemag, this will be the first time the casting concept has been implemented on an industrial scale, and it will enable the casting of new high-strength steels.

The advantages of the casting technology are considerable energy and CO2 savings compared to conventional steel production. It also enables the industrial production of HSD steels (high-strength and ductility). According to Salzgitter Flachstahl, HSD steels are ideally suited for use in automobiles.
