Superior Machine Co. of S.C. shipped the major components for an upcoming revamp of North Star BlueScope Steel’s (NSBSS) electric-arc furnace (EAF). Superior is reassembling the tilt platform, bottom shell and upper shell at NSBSS’s facility in Delta, Ohio. The goal of the revamp is to increase the furnace volume and simplify the design of the bottom shell. By increasing the furnace volume, NSBSS could lower its power consumption and decrease tap-to-tap times.

The simplified bottom-shell design is expected to decrease maintenance outage durations. The modifications will be installed during an outage scheduled for this spring. Superior serves the steel industry with engineering, fabrication, machining and field services.
